Rikea woke with a start as she felt a draft in her nice warm den. She growled a bit and saw that some of the leaf mold she had used to block out the cold had shriveled away and fallen onto the ground. She whimpered and climbed slowly out of the den that was under a rock. She had dug it many moons ago when she first came here.
Rikea walked the path that lead to the mossy cave, she knew about. She had found this place last harsh season and used the moss often. She pawed up some if the dead sticky moss and carried it back to her den, the moss was slimy and unpleasant, but she had to survive. She slicked the moss over her den, licking it into the crevasses all over the den. She stepped back and her stomach growled. Food...

Rage prodded a mound of snow curiously with his paw. His redish fur stood out harshly against the snow, as it always did. He dropped to the snow and shoved his body around in it like he had seen the polar bears do. The young wolf growled. 'GAH! What is wrong with this thing!?' he thought, face contorting in anger. He went around and around, inspecting the small mound. He finally sighed, and began digging a snow "Cavern" as he often did. That particular spot was riddled with them. He had connected all of them so he never lost the whole thing. He heard movement and tossed his large head over his shoulders, hackles risen. You could never be too cautious.

Rikea had scented out a small snow fox and was enjoying her meal, when she heard digging. She would often find other wolves, and they might share a meal or a den for this night, but they would almost always be gone in the morning. She was a hostess of sorts to these woods. It might get lonely at times, but to her it was almost as good as having a pack again. Sighing, she crept around the frozen tree that blocked her view and saw a wolf, reddish in color, not much bigger than a pup. She looked him up and down and let out a small yip. "Who are you?" She asked, her motherly instincts pressing in on her.

He stood up to his full height, reveling him a large, half-grown wolf. "I'm Rage." he said, half-tempted to say his real name. He thumped his back paw down on the lump and the cast a glance at his small hole that would later add to his network of snow caverns. He smelled something... was it coming from the she-wolf before him? Or his prey cache? He sat down slowly, cautiously. He doubted any one in the pack new him, seeing as he spent most his time on the outskirts, digging. He recognized her only slightly and lowered his raised ears. Then, he tucked his tail between his legs. Why did they have to do this for blasted alphas? He lowered his gaze, remembering that eye contact was a threat. He tried hard to suppress the growl in his throat.

Rikea snorted and walked toward him she stopped about a tree-length away and sat down, her head held high. The snow was beginning to fall again, and she was half tempted to walk away, back to her rabbit. She could also tell that he scented it and she was glad that she was bigger than him. She sniffed at him and saw the hole next to him. She noticed his submissive stance and snorted again. "Stop that, don't treat me like I am so mighty. I m only a wolf, I lead my pack well though." She told him with a bit of growl in her voice. She wondered if he ever though about joining a pack. She shuffled her paws in the snow, they were sticking to the ground.

He rightened and began digging again. He could tell by the way she looked at him that she thought he was a lone wolf. "I am part of a pack, you know." he said, not taking his eyes from the frozen ground. He swished his tail and opened his mouth, only to shut it again. Snow fell onto his pelt and stuck there. He liked it, made him look normal. He grinned in grim amusement at the thought. He became very absorbed in what he was doing and soon vanished down into the hole. His first thought was to connect it to the nearest cavern, so he dug right. That was where he remembered the other entrance being.

Rikea shrugged and trotted back around the tree to her fox. She picked up the carcase and dragged it back around the tree and as she neared the hole he had vanished trough, her mind whirled. She dropped the fox at the hole and kicked it in. Her next thought was to walk away, but she stayed there silently for a moment. Getting to her paws, she walked back the way she came again and saw the pond that she usually got water at. She walked aver and tried to break the ice with a paw. it was solid, so she swallowed her fear and stepped onto the ice. She walked around and felt the wind through her fur. She felt the freedom that she had not felt in a long time. She ran and skidded and then as she was walking back to the shore, she heard a crack and all her misgivings came back to her, She froze and then fell, she fell and hit the water. Rikea howled and barked and thrashed, hoping something would hear her.

Rage ran and leaped into the water. He was thoughtless, he had torn from his caverns and leaped after her. He was okay at swimming, but that didnt matter. He acted often on thoughtless action. He couldnt turn from an injured or fallen creature. Only prey. He felt the freezing water touch him, but it didnt affect him. He grabbed the much large she-wolf and began tugging her to the bank. His gold eyes were glazed and dark from within. Their fire had seemed to sputter out as no thought came. His mind began to clear and he was furious with himself. All proper wolves could swim! he was almost finished with his cavern, too! He pulled onto the dry ground and spat out water and fur.

Rikea heaved onto the bank and lay there, breathing heavily. She had managed to keep all water out of her mouth. She panted and sucked in big gulps of air. "Thank you." She sighed at the he-wolf. She was chilled and all she wanted was to go back to her den and sleep this cold off. She tried to get to her paws, but was almost frozen because of her fur being wet and freezing over. She reminded herself that she was never going to do something that stupid ever again. She tried again to get up and succeeded. She began to trudge toward her den, one frozen paw-step at a time. She saw it come into view and heaved a sigh of relief.

Rage was now also frozen and knew he should just go into his cavern, eat some kill, and sleep. That's exactly what he did. He found his food stash, ate some of it, then wandered through the endless halls looking for the smallest room. He finally collapsed and fell into a deep, deep sleep filled with nightmeres of drowning. Horrible creatures lived in the waters of his mind, great bodies of frozen water that giant creatures would leap out of. they were hungry, at his throat. No matter how hard the young wolf tried, he could not wake up. "WAKE UP!!" he screamed in his head. He saw a whole pack standing on the bank, watching dully as he was devoured.
